The pilot

Ivan van Rooyen has flown helicopters professionally for more than twenty years. He has logged over 6,000 flight hours, all of them free of incident or accident, on more than 20 helicopter types.

The flying has been varied by design. It includes offshore operations and commercial passenger transport, external sling loads placed by vertical reference, airborne geophysical survey, powerline washing, charter and VIP flights, medical evacuation support, and close to a decade of wildlife work: game capture, darting and aerial counts.

The examiner

Teaching has run alongside the flying from the start. Ivan has logged more than 3,800 hours as an instructor, taking pilots from their first lesson through to professional licences and on to specialised operations.

In 2012 the South African Civil Aviation Authority appointed him a Designated Flight Examiner. In that role he has conducted initial and renewal flight tests for private and commercial licences, night, instrument and flight instructor ratings, and pilot proficiency checks. He is a general aviation flight examiner.

The manager

Ivan has held most of the posts on which a flight operation depends: Chief Pilot, Chief Flight Instructor, Head of Training, Safety Manager, Flight Operations Manager and Accountable Manager.

That work covers crew management and standardisation, operational planning, regulatory compliance, auditing, documentation and safety management. He continues to fly the line while doing it, which keeps the procedures he writes close to the aircraft.

The reach

Ivan has flown in Africa, the Middle East, India, the United States and Europe. His career began in South Africa and he is now based in Muscat, Oman. He holds Airline Transport Pilot Licences for helicopters issued by the South African Civil Aviation Authority, the United States Federal Aviation Administration and the Civil Aviation Authority of Oman.

He is available for work worldwide, within the privileges and approvals that apply in each country.

How heworks.

Practical before theoretical

Plans and procedures are written by someone who will fly them. If a control does not work at the aircraft, on the day, in the conditions, it is rewritten until it does.

Safety as a working system

Risk is identified early, discussed plainly and managed with controls the crew understand. A safety system earns its keep when people use it without being told to.

Decisions made on the ground

Most good decisions in the air were made before start-up: limits agreed, alternatives planned, and the point at which the task stops decided in advance.

One professional standard

The same preparation goes into a private charter as into a survey contract or a flight test. Clients, crews and candidates are told clearly what to expect, and what cannot be done.
